Celebrating Good Carbohydrates

When you want to lose a little bit of weight or just eat a little bit healthier, it’s tempting to go into anti-carb mode. Yes, I’ve been there before. I remember when the thought of eating a sandwich or a small bowl of pasta did not even seem logical to me.

Definitely cut out the high-sugar carbohydrates such as white bread, breakfast cereals and soft drinks. But you need the good, healthy, complex carbohydrates – such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. They are loaded with vitamins, they are your main source of energy and your body depends on these carbohydrates to function properly.

Carbohydrates are not a guilty pleasure. They are a necessity.

Fuel Your Brain

The connection between the foods we eat and how we think doesn't really enter into most people's minds. The foods we eat can have an immediate impact on brain function. The body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose, which it uses to fuel brain activity. If you don’t eat enough carbohydrates, your ability to think, learn and remember things will decrease because neurotransmitters in your brain will not be synthesised and communication between neurons will break down.

Fantastic Fibre

Nutritious carbohydrate foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes provide a rich source of fibre. Fibre helps keep your bowel movements regular and this means that you’re less likely to feel puffy and bloated because your body will naturally eliminate waste more efficiently. A high-fibre diet also helps to protect against a number of conditions, including colon cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Carbohydrates Make You Happy

When you eat carbohydrates - the amino acid tryptophan makes its way into the brain and your serotonin levels increase. Serotonin is a feel- good hormone, so low levels may leave you feeling stressed, susceptible to depression or to have sleeping difficulties.

Choosing not to eat something because it’s not appealing to you or because it gives you a negative physical reaction – that’s ok. Choosing not to eat something out of perceived necessity or fear – that’s restrictive and not ok. And if you eliminate anything from your diet, you’re more tempted to binge on it later. So why deprive yourself of delicious and healthy food?

Culinary Satisfaction...And Better Workouts

I love carbohydrates because they’re delicious. I love carbohydrates because they help my muscles recover after an intense session of weight training. I definitely feel better when I eat carbohydrates!

  • Gluten free brown rice pasta paired with amazing sauces

  • Delicious breads – gluten free rye bread is my absolute favourite (especially when nut butter is in the picture)

  • Grains such as quinoa – jazzed up as a porridge or tossed through a salad

  • Brown rice in all its guises - stir-fries, risottos, paellas, with curries, in soups...

  • Root vegetables - baked sweet potato topped with spicy guacamole tastes incredible
