Natural Immunity Boosters

I always find that if I am working late for days on end or travelling lots for work, I start feeling tired and wake up foggy and heavy headed. Instead of loading up on cold and flu medicines, I make sure I eat plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables, drink eight to ten glasses of water a day and have natural goodies to boost my immune system. Here are some!

Turmeric

Turmeric offers many health benefits since it has both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric with a teaspoon of honey to make a quick ayurvedic remedy.

Laboratory studies found that curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, reduced the replication of 90% of the cells infected by influenza virus. It also displayed an ability to protect infection from spreading to other cells.

Ginger

When feeling unwell, you can add sliced ginger to tea or as a gargle for sore throats. It is a great appetite stimulant and when you have a fever it helps rid your body of the pathogen causing the fever.

Garlic

Garlic contains the active ingredient allicin, which fights infection and bacteria. As allicin digests in your body, it produces sulfenic acid, a compound that works to stop the damaging effects of radicals. So to ‘activate’ garlic’s medicinal properties, compress a fresh clove with a spoon prior to swallowing it, or put it through your juicer to add to your vegetable juice.

A study that assessed 146 participants over a three‐month period

(half the participants took a placebo tablet and half took a garlic tablet during this time) showed that the garlic takers were two-thirds less likely to catch a cold.

Lemons

Lemons are loaded with vitamin C, which is known to support the body’s natural defences. Add lemon juice to your herbal tea or make hot or cold lemonade with honey to speed up the healing process if you have a cold.
